Grosseto

Grosseto is a city and comune in Tuscany, central-southern Italy, and the capital of the Province of Grosseto. It lies about 25 kilometers inland from the Tyrrhenian Sea, on the Maremma plain near the Ombrone River.

Grosseto is located on the Ombrone alluvial plain in the northern part of the Maremma. The climate is Mediterranean, with mild winters and hot summers, and the surrounding landscape features both agricultural areas and access to the coast.

The historic center grew around a medieval fortress built by the Aldobrandeschi family. In the 16th century the town was redesigned under Medici rule, and the area is encircled by fortified walls known as the Medicean Walls. The cathedral of San Lorenzo is a notable landmark within the core of the old town.

The city serves as the administrative and economic hub of the Maremma, with agriculture, tourism and services forming the local economy. Nearby attractions include the Parco Naturale della Maremma and the beaches at Marina di Grosseto and Principina a Mare.

As of recent estimates, Grosseto has a population of around 82,000. It is served by Grosseto railway station on the Pisa–Rome line; the nearest international airport is Pisa International (Galileo Galilei).
