Gravüreerimise

Gravüreerimise, also known as engraving, is a printmaking technique where an image is created by incising lines into a surface, typically a metal plate, with a sharp tool. The incised lines hold ink, and when the plate is pressed against paper, the ink is transferred, creating a print. This method allows for fine detail and precise lines, making it suitable for intricate designs and text.

Historically, gravüreerimise was a significant means of reproducing images before the advent of photography and modern printing technologies. Artists and artisans would meticulously engrave their designs onto copper or zinc plates. The process involves several stages, including the initial engraving of the image and then the preparation of the plate for printing. This often includes inking the plate, wiping away excess ink so that ink remains only in the incised lines, and then carefully running the plate and paper through a press.
