Graskløver

Graskløver is a Danish term used for clover that grows in grassy areas, particularly in pastures and lawns. It refers to several species within the genus Trifolium, in the legume family Fabaceae. The most common are white clover (Trifolium repens) and red clover (Trifolium pratense), though other Trifolium species may form part of the group in certain regions.

Clovers are herbaceous plants with leaves divided into three leaflets (trifoliate). White clover leaves often carry a pale crescent-shaped mark, while red clover leaves may show different markings. Flowers are borne in dense heads or spikes, and color ranges from white to pink or purplish, depending on species and variety. Clovers are typically perennials or short-lived perennials and are known for their ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen through symbiosis with soil bacteria.

Habitat and cultivation: Graskløver thrives in temperate climates and tolerates mowing, making it common in mixed grasslands, lawns, and grazing pastures. It prefers well-drained soils with moderate fertility and a near-neutral pH. In agriculture, clover is valued as a forage species and as a cover crop that improves soil fertility and structure.

Ecology and use: As a nitrogen-fixer, graskløver enriches soil and supports subsequent crops or grasses. It provides protein-rich forage for livestock and supports pollinators with its flowering heads. In lawns, clover can reduce the need for synthetic nitrogen and contribute to drought tolerance, though it may compete with grasses for light and nutrients.

Management: Clover is commonly included in seed mixes with grasses. Management practices include appropriate mowing height, balanced fertilization to avoid suppressing clover, and reseeding as needed to maintain a clover-grass sward. Some varieties may be considered weeds in highly managed turf.
