Grammat

Grammat is a fictional constructed language that appears in a cycle of science fiction novels and related role-playing game materials. It was devised by a fictional linguist within the works, credited as Dr. Nara Vell, to illustrate how grammatical systems can evolve in a cosmopolitan setting. The language is described as primarily agglutinative with a subject–object–verb order, and it uses an extensive system of affixation to encode tense, aspect, mood, evidentiality, case, number, and agreement.

Phonology is described as fairly regular, with a seven-vowel system featuring vowel harmony and a consonant inventory containing stops, fricatives, and nasals common to many constructed languages. Grammatical relations are indicated mainly by morphology rather than syntactic position, with a cross-linguistic case system including nominative, ergative, and dative-like markers. Verbs carry tense and aspect on suffixes and may include evidentials and mood markers; nouns show number and definiteness through suffixes and a limited set of derivational extensions.

The writing system in the fictional world is a distinctive syllabary known as Grammat Script; a romanization is typically provided for readers. In the canon, there are regional dialects that differ primarily in phonology and lexicon while preserving the core grammar.

Reception and use: Grammat is cited in fan grammars and reference guides as an example of world-building grammar that adds internal realism to a fictional setting.
