Gozer

Gozer, also known as the Gozer the Gozerian, the Gozer the Destructor, or the Gozer the Commercial, is a fictional entity that serves as the primary antagonist in the 1984 film Ghostbusters. It is presented as an ancient, powerful, and malevolent Sumerian deity with the ability to manifest in various forms. Gozer's origins are steeped in mythology, claiming to be the "demi-goddess of the destructive generation."

The entity is summoned to Earth by the followers of a cult, who intend to usher in its return. Gozer's arrival is heralded by increasingly severe paranormal activity in New York City, culminating in the complete possession of Dana Barrett. Upon its arrival, Gozer appears in a flamboyant, androgynous human form, posing as a divine being. It challenges the Ghostbusters, forcing them to choose the form of their destruction. Ray Stantz inadvertently summons the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, which Gozer then inhabits and uses to wreak havoc. The Ghostbusters ultimately defeat Gozer by crossing their streams of proton energy, causing a massive explosion that seemingly banishes the entity.

Gozer's character is notable for its theatricality and its ability to manipulate reality and perception. The entity's motivations are primarily destructive, aiming to consume and destroy humanity. Its ultimate fate remains ambiguous, though its defeat is presented as the resolution of the immediate threat.
