Gotokuji

Gotokuji is a Buddhist temple located in Setagaya, Tokyo, Japan. It is most famously known as the birthplace of the maneki-neko, the beckoning cat figurine. The temple's legend states that in the 17th century, a temple priest rescued a cat and, after its death, dedicated a statue to it. This statue is believed to have inspired the creation of the maneki-neko.

The temple grounds feature a large number of maneki-neko statues, brought by visitors as offerings or souvenirs. Many people visit Gotokuji to pray for good luck and prosperity, often leaving a maneki-neko statue behind. The countless white, beckoning cat figurines create a unique and striking visual spectacle within the temple complex.

Historically, Gotokuji was founded in the early 15th century and belongs to the Soto Zen sect of Buddhism. It has a long history as a place of worship and a monastic center. The temple also has connections to the historical figure Li Naoshi, a samurai who was supposedly invited to the temple by a cat and narrowly avoided an ambush. This event further solidifies the temple's association with cats and good fortune. Today, Gotokuji remains a popular destination for both religious pilgrims and tourists interested in Japanese culture and the iconic maneki-neko.
