Gootinus

Gootinus is a fictional genus of flowering plants used in educational and world-building contexts to illustrate botanical terminology and taxonomic practice. In the imagined taxonomy, Gootinus is placed in the family Gootinaceae, order Gootinales, class Magnoliopsida, and is native to temperate forest regions in the fictional continent of Valoria.

The genus was described by the fictional botanist J. M. Goot in 1987 in the monograph A Revision of Gootinaceae. The name honors the discoverer and preserves the "Goot-" root in line with standard nomenclatural practices.

Gootinus species are herbaceous perennials with erect stems up to about 60 cm tall. Leaves are simple and alternate; the inflorescences are terminal, producing small five-petaled flowers that range in color from lavender to pale blue. Fruits are dry capsules containing several seeds.

Two widely cited species in the fictional literature are Gootinus alba, a white-flowered form often grown as an ornamental, and Gootinus purpureus, which bears purple flowers in late spring.

Distribution includes understory habitats of deciduous forests in Valoria, with ecology indicating pollination by solitary bees and seed dispersal through gravity and brief wind currents.
