Goethe and Schiller were two towering figures of German literature, whose profound friendship and intellectual collaboration profoundly shaped the Weimar Classicism movement. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, born in 1749, and Friedrich Schiller, born in 1759, were both born in the German state of Hesse but met for the first time in 1788, a decade after Schiller's professional career had begun.
