Goatsuckers

Goatsucker is a common name applied to several species of nocturnal birds belonging to the order Caprimulgiformes. These birds are primarily found in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. The name "goatsucker" originates from an ancient myth that these birds suck milk from goats. This belief is entirely unfounded, as goatsuckers are insectivores and feed on flying insects at night.

The most well-known members of this group are the nighthawks and nightjars. They are characterized by their large mouths, excellent camouflage, and silent flight. Their plumage typically consists of mottled browns, grays, and blacks, allowing them to blend seamlessly with their surroundings during the day. Goatsuckers are crepuscular and nocturnal, meaning they are most active at dawn and dusk, and throughout the night.

These birds are often found in open woodlands, grasslands, and savannas. They typically nest on the ground, laying their eggs directly on leaf litter or bare soil. Their cryptic coloration provides effective protection for both the eggs and young. Despite their nocturnal habits and elusive nature, their distinctive calls are often heard in their habitats during the night.
