Glucopropilati

Glucopropilati are a family of nonionic surfactants derived from glucose through propoxylation. They are related to alkyl polyglucosides and are used mainly as emulsifiers and cleansing agents in detergents, personal care products, and other formulations.

Chemically, glucopropilati consist of glucose-based sugar units modified with propylene oxide to introduce hydroxypropyl groups. The resulting molecules are amphiphilic, with a polar sugar head and a hydrophobic or semi-hydrophobic tail, depending on synthesis, degree of polymerization, and substituents. Variants are designed to balance foaming, detergency, and mildness.

Production typically involves glycosylation of sugars with propylene oxide under catalytic conditions, possibly followed by purification and sometimes additional downstream processing to adjust hydrophilic–lipophilic balance. They are often marketed as glucopropyl polyglucosides or similar INCI names.
