Gleitens

Gleitens is a small municipality in the northern part of Eldoria, a fictional European‑style country. It occupies a valley along the Gleitbach river and covers about 28 square kilometers. The terrain comprises mixed deciduous forests, pastures, and scattered crags, with elevations from roughly 360 to 820 meters. The climate is temperate with mild summers and cold winters, influenced by the nearby mountains.

History: Gleitens is first mentioned in records from 1143. It grew around a medieval monastery and later developed as a market town under various feudal rulers. In the 19th century it benefited from railway expansion, and a municipal reform in 1976 merged several neighboring villages into the municipality of Gleitens.

Population and governance: As of 2023, the municipality has about 3,100 residents. The local government is headed by a mayor and a town council elected to four-year terms. The population is predominantly Eldorian-speaking, with a small number of immigrants contributing to cultural diversity.

Economy and infrastructure: The economy combines forestry, dairy farming, and small‑scale manufacturing, together with a modest tourism sector focused on outdoor recreation and heritage sites. Gleitens is connected by regional roads and a short railway spur to the national network. A local bus service links the village centers and nearby attractions.

Culture and landmarks: The town preserves a 12th‑century church dedicated to Saint Michael and a historic market square. Natural attractions include the nearby Gleitens Valley Nature Reserve, protecting beech forests and rare flora. The annual Harvest Festival celebrates regional produce and crafts.
