Gitterförskjutningar

Gitterförskjutningar, or lattice shifts, refer to the displacement of atoms within a crystal structure. These displacements can occur due to various factors, including thermal vibrations, impurities, or external forces like stress or strain. In perfect crystals, atoms occupy precise lattice positions. However, in real materials, imperfections and dynamic processes lead to these deviations.

Point defects, such as vacancies or interstitial atoms, represent localized gitterförskjutningar. A vacancy is a missing atom from its lattice site, causing the surrounding atoms to shift slightly inwards. An interstitial atom is an atom located between regular lattice sites, pushing its neighbors apart.
