Gintama

Gintama is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Hideaki Sorachi. It was serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine from December 2003 to September 2018, and later moved to Jump Giga for its final chapters, concluding in July 2019. The story is set in Edo, Japan, which has been conquered by aliens called Amanto. The Tokugawa shogunate has bowed to the aliens and a futuristic, sci-fi setting is established, with aliens from various planets living among humans.

The series follows the eccentric samurai Gintoki Sakata, who works as a freelance odd-jobber, often referred to as "Yorozuya," with his disciples Shinpachi Shimura and the alien Kagura. They take on any job that comes their way, usually to make rent money, and often find themselves entangled in bizarre and dangerous situations. Gintama is known for its unique blend of comedy, samurai action, and science fiction elements.

The humor in Gintama is often characterized by its self-referential jokes, parody of other manga and anime, and slapstick. However, the series also features serious story arcs that explore themes of friendship, loyalty, and the struggles of the samurai class in a rapidly changing world. The characters are complex and relatable, with Gintoki himself being a lazy, perverted character who nonetheless possesses a strong sense of justice and a willingness to protect his friends. Gintama has been adapted into multiple anime television series, films, OVAs, and live-action adaptations.
