Gimnázium is a type of secondary school found in several Central and Eastern European countries, most notably Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Austria, and Slovenia. The term derives from the Greek word "gymnasion," which historically referred to a place of public exercise and learning. In its modern context, a gimnázium typically offers a general academic education preparing students for higher education.

These institutions usually cater to students aged around 14 to 18, covering a curriculum that spans four or six years depending on the specific system. The curriculum is broad, encompassing a wide range of subjects including languages, mathematics, sciences, history, and arts. The emphasis is often on developing critical thinking, analytical skills, and a strong foundation for university studies.

Admission to a gimnázium is often competitive, typically requiring successful completion of primary education and passing entrance examinations. Graduates of a gimnázium usually receive a maturitás or "baccalaureate" diploma, which is a prerequisite for entering universities or other tertiary educational institutions.
