Gigavolts are a unit of electric potential, or voltage, equal to one billion volts. The prefix "giga" denotes a factor of 10^9 in the International System of Units (SI). Therefore, one gigavolt (GV) is equivalent to 1,000,000,000 volts. This unit is used to describe extremely high voltages, far exceeding those typically encountered in household electrical systems or even most industrial applications.

Under specific atmospheric conditions, discharges of extreme magnitude could theoretically approach gigavolt levels, though direct measurement is exceptionally challenging.
