This classification has been suggested by some researchers to encompass a group of large, often fossilized, bivalve shells. The term itself, "Gigatonidae," alludes to the immense size and potential weight of these specimens, with "gigaton" being a unit of mass.

The concept of Gigatonidae is not universally accepted within the scientific community.
