Gezichtspoeder, also known as face mites, are tiny arachnids that belong to the family Acaridae. They are one of the most common types of mites found in homes, often living in carpets, bedding, and upholstered furniture. Face mites get their name from their preference for human skin, particularly around the face, eyes, and nose, where they feed on skin cells and debris. They are not known to transmit diseases to humans, but their presence can cause itching, redness, and irritation.

Adult face mites are about 0.3 mm (0.012 in) long and have eight legs. They are translucent, making them difficult to see with the naked eye. The life cycle of a face mite includes four stages: egg, larva, nymph, and adult. The entire life cycle can take about 21 days to complete under optimal conditions.

To control face mites, it is important to maintain a clean living environment. Regular vacuuming, washing bedding in hot water, and using mite-proof mattress and pillow encasements can help reduce their population. Additionally, avoiding contact with infested materials and using insecticides specifically designed for mites can be effective in controlling infestations. However, it is important to note that some insecticides may cause irritation to the skin, so caution should be exercised when using them.
