Geveldelen

Geveldelen is a Dutch architectural term that denotes the distinct parts or planes of a building's façade, particularly the gable. The word is derived from gevel (facade) and delen (parts). In practice, geveldelen refer to the segmentation of a façade into modules or panels, which may be defined by vertical divisions such as window bays, pilasters, or brick or stone strips, and by horizontal divisions such as string courses, cornices, or the edge of a gable roof.

These divisions create a visual rhythm and govern the overall proportion of the façade. They can be purely decorative, as in the use of contrasting materials or decorative paneling, or functional, aligning openings, structural joints, or weatherproofing details. In historic Dutch architecture, geveldelen are often used to describe the articulation of a façade into a lower, middle, and upper zone, or into repeating bays that give the façade its characteristic cadence.

From a technical perspective, geveldelen help architects and conservators analyze and reproduce façades. When restoring a listed building, the original geveldelen guide decisions about material, color, and window arrangement. In contemporary design, the concept remains a tool to achieve balance and modularity by dividing a facade into legible sections.
