Gesamtrelease is a release strategy in software engineering and product deployment in which a complete set of changes—new features, bug fixes, and dependencies—is delivered in a single, unified release rather than through sequential or iterative deployments. The term combines the German gesamt meaning total or overall with the English word release. In practice, a Gesamtrelease results in one installation or update package that users apply once, after which all modules are upgraded and operate together as a single end state.

The approach is commonly used in enterprise environments, in regulated industries, or for systems with tight interdependencies where compatible end-to-end functionality is essential. It can be favored when release governance, documentation, and auditing require a clearly defined, auditable artifact, or when customers prefer a known, complete upgrade rather than frequent incremental updates.

Advantages include simplified deployment and rollback procedures, since there is only one artifact to manage; consistent end-to-end functionality; and clearer regulatory and compliance records. Disadvantages include longer development and testing cycles, higher risk if defects are discovered late in the process, reduced flexibility for incremental improvements, and potential downtime or user impact associated with a large, all-at-once upgrade.
