Georefererimist is a term that describes an individual or entity that engages in the practice of georeferencing. Georeferencing is the process of assigning geographic coordinates to data. This data can take many forms, including maps, aerial photographs, satellite imagery, or even historical documents that describe locations. By attaching geographic coordinates (such as latitude and longitude) to these items, they can be accurately placed within a geographic information system (GIS) or other spatial analysis tools.

A georefererimist might work in various fields. Cartographers use georeferencing to ensure that new maps align correctly with existing geographic data. Archaeologists might georeference historical maps to understand the spatial distribution of past settlements. Environmental scientists could georeference satellite imagery to track changes in land cover over time. Urban planners rely on georeferenced data to manage infrastructure and development.

The process of georeferencing typically involves identifying common points, known as ground control points (GCPs), that appear in both the source data (e.g., an old scanned map) and a modern, accurately georeferenced dataset (e.g., a current satellite image). By matching these points, a mathematical transformation can be calculated to warp the source data to fit the real-world coordinate system. The accuracy of the georeferencing is dependent on the number and distribution of GCPs, as well as the quality of the source data.
