Geometrietoleranzen

Geometrietoleranzen, often shortened to GToleranzen, are a crucial aspect of technical drawings and manufacturing. They define the permissible variations in the form, orientation, location, and run-out of features on a manufactured part. Instead of simply specifying dimensions, geometrietoleranzen ensure that a part functions correctly and fits with other components within a system.

These tolerances are typically represented using symbols and datum references according to international standards, primarily ISO 1101. The symbols indicate the type of geometric characteristic being controlled, such as straightness, flatness, circularity, profile, perpendicularity, parallelism, position, and concentricity. Datum references are used to establish a stable reference frame against which the tolerances are applied.

The purpose of geometrietoleranzen is to guarantee interchangeability of parts and ensure functional requirements are met. By controlling geometric variations, manufacturers can reduce scrap, improve product quality, and minimize assembly issues. They provide a more comprehensive understanding of acceptable deviations than basic dimensional tolerances alone, which only control size.
