GeologiePetrographie is the branch of geology dedicated to describing and interpreting rocks at the microscopic level to reveal mineralogy, textures, and geological history. It combines petrographic analysis with various analytical techniques to classify rocks and infer formation and alteration conditions. The field is practiced in academic laboratories, research institutions, and industries such as mining and petroleum, where detailed rock characterization informs interpretation and decision making.

Core methods revolve around petrographic microscopy, using plane-polarized and cross-polarized light to identify minerals and textural relationships. Point counting for modal analysis quantifies mineral abundances, while texture assessment—grain size, shape, zoning, and deformation features—helps reconstruct processes. Complementary techniques include scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), and Raman spectroscopy to determine composition and mineral phases with higher precision. Thin sections, typically about 30 micrometers thick, are prepared from rock fragments to enable these analyses.
