Genypterus

Genypterus is a genus of ray-finned fishes belonging to the family Ophidiidae. These fishes are commonly known as cusk-eels. The genus Genypterus is found in the southeastern Pacific Ocean and southwestern Atlantic Ocean, primarily off the coasts of Chile, Argentina, and Peru. They are demersal fish, meaning they live on or near the seabed.

Species within the Genypterus genus are characterized by their elongated, eel-like bodies, with the dorsal and anal fins extending along most of the body length and merging with the caudal fin. They possess small, cycloid scales and a single barbel on the chin. The coloration of Genypterus species varies, often reflecting their benthic habitat, with shades of brown, gray, and sometimes reddish hues.

These fish are carnivorous, feeding on a variety of invertebrates and smaller fishes found on the ocean floor. They are often caught by artisanal and commercial fisheries in their native ranges, where they are valued as a food source. Common species include Genypterus chilensis, known as the "red cusk-eel," and Genypterus blacodes, the "pink cusk-eel." Their reproductive habits are not extensively documented but are typical of other ophidiid fishes, with external fertilization and pelagic eggs.
