Gentranskription

Gentranskription, often referred to as gene transcription, is the biological process by which the information encoded in a gene’s DNA sequence is copied into a complementary RNA molecule. This step is the first phase of gene expression and is essential for producing proteins and functional RNA components.

In prokaryotes, transcription occurs in the cytoplasm and is carried out by a single RNA polymerase that binds to promoter regions with the help of sigma factors. The process proceeds through initiation, elongation, and termination, producing a messenger RNA (mRNA) or various non-coding RNAs directly from the DNA template.

In eukaryotes, transcription takes place in the cell nucleus and involves three eukaryotic RNA polymerases. RNA polymerase II synthesizes most protein-coding mRNAs, while RNA polymerases I and III produce ribosomal RNA and transfer RNA, respectively. Transcription in eukaryotes requires a set of transcription factors to recognize promoters and can be modulated by enhancers, silencers, and chromatin structure. The initial RNA transcript, or pre-mRNA, undergoes processing including 5’ capping, splicing to remove introns, and 3’ polyadenylation before becoming a mature mRNA.

Regulation of gentranskription is a major control point for gene expression and can be influenced by epigenetic marks such as DNA methylation and histone modifications, as well as cellular signals and environmental conditions. Misregulation can contribute to developmental disorders and diseases.
