Genomemodifying

Genomemodifying refers to the process of altering the genetic material of an organism or cell to change its DNA sequence, regulation, or epigenetic state. It can be used to introduce, remove, or modify genes or regulatory elements and may affect somatic cells or germ cells. When changes occur in germ cells, they are potentially heritable. Genomemodifying contrasts with traditional breeding by enabling targeted and precise edits.

Technologies used include genome editing and genetic engineering. Modern approaches rely on site-specific nucleases such as zinc finger nucleases, transcription activator-like effector nucleases, and CRISPR-Cas systems, which create double-strand breaks repaired by cellular processes. Newer methods include base editing and prime editing that induce single-base changes or precise substitutions without double-strand breaks, and epigenome editing that modulates gene expression without altering DNA sequence. Delivery methods encompass viral vectors, non-viral strategies, and direct delivery of ribonucleoprotein complexes.

Applications span research, medicine, agriculture, and industry. In research, genomemodifying enables functional studies and the creation of disease models. In medicine, gene therapies aim to treat genetic disorders and ex vivo cell therapies are in development. In agriculture and industry, genomemodifying can improve crop traits or microbial production and resilience. Ethical, safety, and regulatory considerations focus on off-target effects, mosaicism, ecological impact, biosafety, consent in clinical contexts, and the need for long-term monitoring. Regulatory frameworks vary by country and typically require risk assessment, oversight, and, where applicable, informed consent.
