Generisk

Generisk is a neutral term used in several Scandinavian languages, including Swedish, Norwegian and Danish, meaning “generic” or “not branded.” It is used to describe products or concepts that apply broadly, rather than to a specific instance. The word is widely used in science, commerce and technology to distinguish between branded or specialty versions and those that belong to a general category.

In pharmaceuticals, generiska läkemedel (generic medicines) are drugs that have the same active ingredient, dosage form, strength and route of administration as a reference product, and are demonstrated to be bioequivalent. They enter the market after patent protection or exclusivity on the brand-name drug expires. Regulatory authorities assess generics for sameness of quality, safety and efficacy. They are typically cheaper and can improve patient access to medicines. Substitution policies may allow pharmacists to dispense generics unless the prescriber or patient requests the brand.

In computing and information technology, generisk (generic) describes code elements or algorithms that are parameterized over types, allowing a single implementation to work with different data types. This concept, known as generics or generic programming, promotes code reuse and type safety and is supported in languages such as Java, C#, and C++.

In retail and consumer products, a generisk produkt or generiskt varumärke refers to store-brand or private-label products that are not marketed under a national brand. These products often compete on price and can vary in packaging and perceived value, but are typically designed to meet the same specifications as branded equivalents.
