Generaliteitslanden
Generaliteitslanden, or Generality Lands, were territories in the Dutch Republic that were governed directly by the central authorities of the States General rather than by a provincial government. They originated in the aftermath of the Eighty Years’ War when parts of the Habsburg Netherlands were confiscated and brought under central control. The purpose of placing these lands under the generality was to strengthen centralized authority, secure strategic frontiers, and reduce local autonomy in areas considered important for defense and administration.
