Genelletirmeler, often translated as generalizations or generalizations in English, refers to the process of drawing a broader conclusion or principle from specific instances or observations. This cognitive process is fundamental to learning, reasoning, and understanding the world around us. It involves identifying common patterns, features, or relationships among a set of examples and then formulating a statement that applies to all instances of that category, not just the observed ones.

In scientific inquiry, generalization is a cornerstone of hypothesis formation and theory building. Researchers observe specific phenomena, identify recurring trends, and then generalize these findings to propose a hypothesis that can be tested more broadly. Similarly, in everyday life, we generalize from our experiences to form beliefs about people, places, and situations. For example, if a person has positive interactions with several individuals from a particular profession, they might generalize that people in that profession are generally friendly.

However, generalizations are not always accurate. A hasty generalization occurs when a conclusion is drawn from insufficient or unrepresentative evidence. This can lead to stereotypes and prejudice if the generalizations are applied to groups of people. Critical thinking involves evaluating the validity of generalizations by examining the evidence upon which they are based and considering potential counterexamples. The strength of a generalization depends on the sample size, the representativeness of the sample, and the consistency of the observed patterns.
