Genealoogilises is an interdisciplinary field that studies genealogical networks and lineages within human populations. It blends traditional archival genealogy with data science to reconstruct family trees, map kinship ties, and analyze population histories at scales from individuals to regions. Researchers combine sources such as parish registers, civil vital records, census data, immigration documents, and, when available, genetic data to establish connections and estimate relationships that are uncertain. Digital databases, data standards, and probabilistic methods support linking diverse sources and quantifying uncertainty. Network analysis and geographic information systems are used to visualize kinship networks and migration paths.

The field grew from traditional genealogy and demographic research, gaining momentum with digitization and online archives in the late 20th century. Advances in computation and genetic testing have broadened its scope to population genealogies and diaspora studies.

Applications include constructing personal and community histories, studying population structure and migration, tracing hereditary traits and diseases, and informing cultural heritage projects and public history.

Challenges and ethics: Data gaps, uneven record quality, and biases in what is recorded pose methodological problems. Privacy and consent are central when handling living individuals or sensitive information. Legal constraints, varying ethical norms, and the need to communicate uncertainty clearly are ongoing concerns.
