GeländeKonturen, a German term, translates to "terrain contours" or "topographical contours." It refers to the lines on a map or a digital model that represent areas of equal elevation above a given reference level, typically mean sea level. These lines are a fundamental tool in cartography and geography for depicting the shape and steepness of the land surface.

The closer the contour lines are to each other, the steeper the terrain. Conversely, widely spaced contour lines indicate a gentler slope. Contour lines never cross or merge, except in the rare case of a vertical cliff. Contour intervals, the difference in elevation between adjacent contour lines, are chosen based on the scale of the map and the topography of the area. Larger intervals are used for flatter regions, while smaller intervals are used for mountainous areas to capture more detail.

GeländeKonturen are essential for various applications including land surveying, urban planning, civil engineering, hiking, and environmental studies.
