Gehörlose

Gehörlose is a German term used for people with substantial hearing loss who identify with a Deaf community. The term can refer to both individuals and the cultural-linguistic group itself. Some people prefer person-centered language such as “Gehörlose Menschen” or “Menschen mit Gehörlosigkeit” to emphasize the person rather than the disability, reflecting different linguistic and cultural views.

Communication and language use vary among Gehörlose. Many use Deutsche Gebärdensprache (DGS) as their first language, which has its own grammar and structure distinct from written or spoken German. Not all Gehörlose rely on sign language alone; some use lip-reading, spoken German, hearing aids, cochlear implants, or combinations of modalities. In education and public life, bilingual approaches that integrate DGS and written German are common.

Culture and community play a central role for many Gehörlose. They form a Deaf community with shared norms, networks, and cultural events.
