Gegenleser
Gegenleser is a German term that translates literally to "counter-reader" or "opposite reader." It refers to a specific type of reading practice and theoretical concept that emerged from post-structuralist thought, particularly within literary and cultural criticism. The core idea of the gegenleser is to engage with a text not by seeking to understand or affirm its intended meaning or dominant interpretations, but rather by actively looking for its silences, contradictions, hidden assumptions, and alternative possibilities.
