Gatorboard

Gatorboard is a brand-name rigid panel commonly used as a mounting substrate for art, photography, and signage. It consists of a dense wood-fiber core encased in resin-treated outer surfaces, producing a stiff, lightweight board that is more dent-resistant and dimensionally stable than standard foam boards.

Compared with traditional foam core, Gatorboard offers greater rigidity, stronger edges, and better resistance to bending. It also tends to handle changes in humidity and temperature more effectively, though it is not waterproof and can still suffer water damage if exposed to sustained moisture. The board is heavier than foam core, which should be considered for framing or installation projects.

Typical uses include mounting prints and photographs, backing for framed artworks, painting panels for acrylic or mixed-media work, and lightweight sign substrates for displays or exhibitions. It accepts a variety of mounting methods, such as acid-free adhesives, double-sided tape, or spray adhesives, and can be painted or coated depending on the project.

Availability and sizes vary by manufacturer, but common thicknesses include around 3/16 inch (4.8 mm) and 1/2 inch (12.7 mm), with sheet sizes ranging from small practice panels to larger 4x8-foot (and similar) panels for signs and displays. The material is often marketed toward artists, photographers, sign shops, and galleries seeking a durable alternative to standard foam boards.

Care and handling involve cutting with a sharp utility knife, sealing edges to minimize moisture ingress, and storing flat and away from prolonged moisture or direct outdoor exposure.
