Gatewayadres

Gatewayadres, commonly translated as gateway address, is the IP address of the device that serves as the access point to other networks on a local network. In English terminology, this is often called the default gateway. The gatewayadres is the destination to which devices send traffic destined for networks outside their own subnet. In Dutch networking terminology, it is the address of the router or firewall that connects the local network to greater networks, including the Internet.

In IPv4 networks, the gatewayadres is an IP address on the local subnet. Examples include 192.168.1.1 or 10.0.0.1. The gateway device often performs Network Address Translation (NAT) to reach the public Internet. Clients usually obtain the gatewayadres automatically via DHCP, or it can be configured manually as the default route. The default route on a device points to the gatewayadres when there is no more specific route for a destination.

In IPv6, the gateway is the router’s IPv6 address used in default routes, typically discovered through router advertisements and configured via RA/SLAAC or DHCPv6.

Configuration and operation: The gateway устройство can be a dedicated router, a firewall, or a modem-router combination provided by an Internet service provider. It may offer services such as DHCP, DNS, and NAT, and enforce security policies via a firewall.

Troubleshooting and security: If devices cannot reach outside networks, check the gatewayadres, reachability (ping or traceroute), and the routing table. Secure the gateway with regular firmware updates and appropriate firewall settings to protect the network.
