Gasspjældet

Gasspjældet, often translated as throttle body, is a crucial component in internal combustion engines. Its primary function is to regulate the amount of air flowing into the engine, thereby controlling the engine's speed and power output. It is typically located between the air intake and the engine's intake manifold.

The gasspjældet consists of a butterfly valve, also known as a throttle plate, which is mounted on a spindle. This valve can be rotated to open or close the passage for air. When the driver presses the accelerator pedal, a linkage or electronic signal causes the throttle plate to open, allowing more air to enter the engine. Conversely, when the pedal is released, the throttle plate closes, restricting airflow and reducing engine speed.

In modern vehicles, gasspjældet is often electronically controlled, referred to as an electronic throttle control (ETC) or drive-by-wire system. In these systems, a sensor on the accelerator pedal sends a signal to the engine control unit (ECU), which then commands an electric motor to adjust the throttle plate's position. This allows for more precise control over engine performance, fuel efficiency, and emissions. Older vehicles typically used a mechanical linkage directly connecting the accelerator pedal to the gasspjældet. A malfunctioning gasspjældet can lead to issues such as rough idling, poor acceleration, stalling, or illuminated engine warning lights.
