Garvmetoder refers to a collection of techniques and approaches used for the preservation and treatment of animal hides and skins to prevent decomposition and prepare them for use in various industries. The primary goal of these methods is to stabilize the collagen fibers within the skin, making them resistant to bacterial decay and physical degradation. Historically, various natural substances have been employed, ranging from smoking and drying to the use of animal fats and brains.

Modern garvmetoder often involve a multi-step process. Initially, the raw hides undergo a soaking or "soaking" stage to rehydrate them and remove residual blood and salt. This is followed by a liming process, where the hides are treated with calcium hydroxide (lime) to loosen the hair and epidermis. After liming, the hides are de-haired and often bated, a process using enzymes to further clean the skin and prepare it for tanning.

The crucial step is tanning, which converts the unstable skin into durable leather. Traditional tanning methods often utilized vegetable tannins derived from tree bark and plant extracts. These tannins create a stable complex with the collagen, resulting in a process that can take weeks or months. Chrome tanning, a more contemporary method, uses chromium salts and is significantly faster, producing a softer and more pliable leather. Other methods like aldehyde tanning and synthetic tanning also exist, each offering different properties to the final product. The choice of garvmetoder significantly influences the characteristics of the finished leather, including its strength, flexibility, water resistance, and appearance.
