GTKns

GTKns is a modular extension of the GTK toolkit designed to provide a namespace-aware, plugin-driven approach to building graphical user interfaces. It seeks to offer dynamic UI composition, performance-oriented rendering options, and closer integration with GTK 4 while remaining compatible with existing GTK code through bridging layers.

Origin and development: GTKns emerged in the mid-2020s as an experimental project within the broader GTK ecosystem. It has not been incorporated into the official GTK project, and releases are community-maintained with varying levels of support and documentation.

Architecture: The architecture centers on a namespace manager that isolates widget types and signals, a library of NS widgets, a rendering backend abstraction that can route drawing through Cairo, OpenGL, or Vulkan, and a pluggable extension system for runtime features such as theming or input handling.

Features: Key features include lightweight startup, dynamic layout recalculation, an advanced theming engine, extended accessibility hooks, and language bindings for Python and Rust.

Usage and compatibility: Applications can opt to use GTKns as a supplementary layer alongside GTK 4, but integration requires the GTKns runtime and may entail API bridging work. Not all GTK applications are guaranteed to function without adjustment.
