GDPRpersonvernforordningen refers to the General Data Protection Regulation, commonly known as GDPR, as implemented or discussed in a Norwegian context. The GDPR is a comprehensive data protection law enacted by the European Union that came into effect on May 25, 2018. Its primary goal is to harmonize data privacy laws across Europe, protect the fundamental rights of individuals regarding their personal data, and reshape the way organizations approach data privacy.

The regulation applies to any organization that processes the personal data of individuals residing within the European Economic Area (EEA), regardless of where the organization itself is located. This includes collecting, storing, processing, and transferring personal data. Key principles of GDPR include lawfulness, fairness, transparency, purpose limitation, data minimization, accuracy, storage limitation, integrity, and confidentiality.

Individuals, referred to as data subjects, are granted significant rights under GDPR. These include the right to access their data, the right to rectification, the right to erasure (the "right to be forgotten"), the right to restrict processing, the right to data portability, and the right to object to processing. Organizations must obtain explicit consent for data processing in many cases and must be able to demonstrate compliance with the regulation.

Non-compliance with GDPR can result in substantial fines, which can be up to €20 million or 4% of a company's annual global turnover, whichever is higher. GDPRpersonvernforordningen highlights the importance of data protection and the stringent requirements placed on entities handling personal information within Norway and the broader EEA.
