GAVO

gavo is the name of a software framework and a set of services that provide a unified interface to astrophysical data and tools. The project originated in Germany as part of an effort to build a national Virtual Observatory. In 2005, the German Astrophysical Virtual Observatory, commonly abbreviated as GAVO, was launched to make astronomical data more accessible to researchers worldwide. The framework is written in Python and uses a modular architecture that allows easy integration of new data sets and services.

The main functions of gavo include data ingestion, access via standard Virtual Observatory protocols, and catalog management. The platform supports widely used protocols such as Table Access Protocol (TAP) and Simple Image Access (SIA) and it provides an API that enables users to query and retrieve data as well as to publish new services. gavo also contains a web interface that facilitates data discovery, VO tool interaction, and user management. In addition, the project offers a catalog of standardized data sets and a set of adapters that permit the addition of new instruments, surveys, or archives.

Since its inception, gavo has contributed to scientific publications by providing efficient, standardized access to heterogeneous astronomical data. The framework is maintained by a collaboration of German research institutes and continues to evolve in compliance with the standards set by the International Virtual Observatory Alliance.
