GATE16

GATE16 refers to the 2016 edition of the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), a national-level examination in India designed to assess the technical and analytical abilities of graduates in engineering and science disciplines. GATE is used for admissions to postgraduate programs (such as MTech and PhD) at many institutes and for eligibility in recruitment by a wide range of public sector undertakings and some private organizations. It is also used by institutions for fellowships and financial assistance.

The exam is typically computer-based, lasts three hours, and has a total of 100 marks. It combines General Aptitude questions with subject-specific questions drawn from undergraduate curricula. The paper is designed to test a mix of conceptual understanding, problem-solving ability, and, in some cases, numerical answer type questions. The format and marking scheme are crafted to allow broad applicability across engineering and science disciplines.

After the examination, a GATE score and percentile are released. The score is used by universities and PSUs to shortlist candidates for admissions and recruitment, respectively. The score validity is generally for a specified period, commonly cited as three years, for purposes of admission or employment.

GATE is coordinated by a consortium of Indian institutes under the National Coordination Board – GATE, with an organizing institute responsible for paper setting, evaluation, and result processing in a given year. The 2016 edition follows this established framework and contributes to the ongoing role of GATE as a key gateway for advanced study and selective employment opportunities in India.
