Gázgyltetés

Gázgyltetés, often translated as gaslighting, is a form of psychological manipulation where a person or group subtly causes someone to question their own memory, perception, or sanity. The term originates from the 1938 play and subsequent 1944 film "Gaslight," in which a husband manipulates his wife into believing she is going insane by subtly altering their environment, such as dimming the gas lights, and then denying that any changes have occurred.

The perpetrator of gaslighting typically employs a pattern of behaviors, including persistent denial of events, trivializing the victim's feelings, countering the victim's memories with false information, and undermining their confidence. The goal is to gain power and control over the victim by eroding their sense of reality. This can lead to significant psychological distress for the victim, including anxiety, depression, confusion, and a diminished sense of self-worth.

Gaslighting can occur in various relationships, such as romantic partnerships, family dynamics, and professional settings. It is a insidious form of abuse because it often happens gradually and without overt aggression, making it difficult for the victim to recognize what is happening. Victims may become dependent on the abuser for validation and may doubt their own judgment. Rebuilding trust in oneself is a crucial part of recovering from gaslighting.
