Fültünet

Fültünet, also known as "fülszemölcs" (earwax) in Hungarian, refers to the natural, waxy substance produced by glands in the outer part of the ear canal. Its primary function is to protect the ear by trapping dust, debris, and microorganisms, preventing them from reaching the eardrum. Fültünet is typically yellowish-brown but can vary in color depending on factors such as diet, genetics, and environmental exposure.

While fültünet is generally harmless and serves a protective role, an excessive buildup can lead to discomfort, hearing loss, or even infection. Symptoms of impacted earwax may include earache, reduced hearing, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), or a sensation of fullness in the ear. In some cases, it may cause dizziness or coughing, particularly in children.

Most people do not require medical intervention for earwax removal, as it often clears on its own. However, certain individuals, such as those with narrow ear canals, frequent ear infections, or conditions like cerumen impaction, may need assistance. Common home remedies include using warm olive oil or mineral oil drops to soften the wax, followed by irrigation with a syringe or bulb syringe filled with warm water. Over-the-counter ear drops containing hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide can also help dissolve excess wax.

It is important to avoid inserting cotton swabs or other objects into the ear canal, as this can push wax deeper and potentially damage the eardrum. If self-treatment fails or if symptoms persist, medical professionals may use techniques such as manual removal with specialized tools, suction, or microscopic visualization to safely clear the ear canal. Regular ear hygiene and avoiding excessive ear canal manipulation can help prevent excessive buildup of fültünet.
