Førskole

Førskole is an early childhood education phase or program designed to prepare children for formal schooling. The term is used in several Nordic countries, notably Denmark and Norway, to describe the period before entering primary education. In many systems, førskole targets children around five to six years old and lasts about one year, though the exact age range and length vary by country and locality. Sometimes it is offered as a separate program distinct from kindergarten, while in other areas it forms part of a broader early childhood program.

The main objectives are socialization and the development of foundational literacy and numeracy, language skills, problem-solving, and motor and self-care abilities. Emphasis is often on play-based learning and routines that help children manage transitions between home and school, adapt to group settings, and follow instructions. Activities commonly include storytelling, arts and crafts, outdoor play, songs, basic literacy and numeracy activities, and cooperative games.

Organization and access differ by region. In many areas, førskole is publicly funded as part of early childhood education, while private providers also operate services. Attendance may be voluntary or mandated as part of broader early childhood programs depending on local policy.

The intended outcome is a smooth transition to primary schooling and the development of social-emotional skills, curiosity, and learning dispositions. Policies often emphasize inclusivity and early support for children with additional needs.
