Föstumánuður

Föstumánuður, meaning "fasting month" in Icelandic, refers to the month of Ramadan in Islamic tradition. During Föstumánuður, adult Muslims who are able are obligated to fast from dawn until sunset. This fasting, known as *sawm*, involves abstaining from food, drink, smoking, and marital relations. The purpose of Föstumánuður extends beyond mere abstinence; it is a time for spiritual reflection, increased devotion, and acts of charity. Muslims are encouraged to engage in prayer, read the Quran, and practice self-discipline.

The month begins with the sighting of the new crescent moon, marking the start of the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Each day of Föstumánuður concludes with the *iftar*, the breaking of the fast, often a communal meal shared with family and friends. Before dawn, a pre-fast meal called *suhoor* is consumed. Föstumánuður is a period of heightened community spirit and shared experience among Muslims. It is a time to strengthen faith, cultivate empathy for the less fortunate, and strive for moral and spiritual purification. The end of Föstumánuður is celebrated with the holiday of Eid al-Fitr.
