Fényáteresztés, also known as light transmission, refers to the passage of light through a material. The degree to which light can pass through a substance determines its optical properties, categorizing materials into transparent, translucent, and opaque. Transparent materials, like glass or clear plastic, allow light to pass through without significant scattering, enabling clear vision of objects on the other side. Translucent materials, such as frosted glass or parchment paper, allow light to pass through, but scatter it in various directions, obscuring clear visibility of objects. Opaque materials, like wood or metal, do not allow light to pass through at all; instead, light is either reflected or absorbed by the material.

The interaction of light with matter during transmission can involve absorption, reflection, and scattering. Absorption occurs when the material converts light energy into other forms, such as heat. Reflection is the bouncing back of light from the surface of the material. Scattering involves the redirection of light in multiple directions as it passes through the material. These processes are influenced by the material's composition, its physical structure, and the wavelength of the light. For instance, certain materials may appear colored because they absorb specific wavelengths of visible light while transmitting or reflecting others. Understanding and controlling light transmission is crucial in various applications, including optics, architecture, and the design of display technologies.
