Färgåtergivningsförmåga, often translated as Color Rendering Index (CRI), is a measure of a light source's ability to accurately reproduce the colors of various objects compared to a natural light source, such as sunlight. It quantifies how true-to-life the colors appear under the light. A higher CRI value indicates that the light source renders colors more faithfully.

The CRI scale ranges from 0 to 100. A CRI of 100 represents a perfect match to the color rendering of a natural light source. Most artificial light sources have a CRI below 100. For instance, incandescent bulbs typically have a CRI of around 95-100, while fluorescent lamps and LEDs can vary widely, with some offering excellent color rendering (CRI above 90) and others much lower.

Understanding CRI is important in applications where accurate color perception is crucial, such as in art galleries, retail environments, photography studios, and even in everyday home lighting. Low CRI light can make colors appear dull, washed out, or even distorted, affecting the visual experience and the perceived quality of objects. When choosing light sources, considering the CRI value alongside other factors like color temperature and brightness can help ensure that the desired visual outcome is achieved.
