Fyrastångs

Fyrastångs is a Swedish term that translates to "fire rod" or "fire stick." It refers to a type of friction-based fire starter that has been used historically, particularly in rural and outdoor settings. The basic principle involves rapidly rotating a wooden stick against a piece of wood with a notch, generating friction and heat that eventually ignites tinder.

The construction of a fyrastångs apparatus typically involves a hearth board, a drill (the rotating stick), and a socket or handhold to apply downward pressure. The hearth board is usually made of a soft, dry wood, while the drill can be made of a harder wood. The notch in the hearth board is crucial for collecting the smoldering material. Tinder, such as dry grass, bark shavings, or cottonwood fluff, is placed near the notch to catch the ember produced by the friction.

The technique requires practice and skill to achieve successful ignition.
