Fusiegewricht

Fusiegewricht is a Dutch term that translates to "fusion joint" or "ankylosed joint" in English. It refers to a joint in the body where the bones have abnormally fused together, resulting in a loss of normal movement. This fusion can occur in various parts of the skeletal system, including the spine, fingers, toes, or larger joints like the knee or hip.

The causes of fusiegewricht can be diverse. Trauma or injury to a joint can lead to the formation of new bone that bridges the gap between the bones, causing fusion. Inflammatory conditions, such as certain types of arthritis, can also result in joint fusion over time as the inflammation damages the joint cartilage and leads to bony union. Congenital conditions, present from birth, can also manifest as fused joints.

The consequences of fusiegewricht depend on its location and extent. A fused joint in the spine, for example, can restrict movement and lead to stiffness and pain. Fusion in the fingers or toes might impair dexterity and the ability to perform fine motor tasks. In larger joints, fusion can significantly limit mobility and affect a person's ability to walk or perform daily activities. Treatment often focuses on managing pain and improving function, which may involve physical therapy, medication, or in some cases, surgical intervention to attempt to restore some degree of movement or to realign the fused bones.
