Funktiolisomeerit

Funktiolisomeerit are isomers that have the same molecular formula but differ in the arrangement of atoms, specifically leading to different functional groups. This is a subcategory of structural isomerism, which also includes positional isomers and chain isomers. In funktiolisomeerit, the connectivity of atoms within the molecule is identical, but the atoms are grouped differently to form distinct functional groups.

For example, a common illustration of funktiolisomeerit involves compounds with the molecular formula C2H6O. This formula can represent ethanol, which contains an alcohol functional group (-OH), or dimethyl ether, which contains an ether functional group (-O-). While both molecules have two carbon atoms, six hydrogen atoms, and one oxygen atom, the way these atoms are bonded results in entirely different chemical properties and reactivity. Ethanol is a liquid at room temperature and is soluble in water, whereas dimethyl ether is a gas and has limited water solubility.

Another example is found with the molecular formula C3H6O. This can form propanal (an aldehyde) or propanone (a ketone). Aldehydes and ketones are distinct classes of organic compounds with differing chemical behaviors, particularly in oxidation reactions. The presence of the carbonyl group (C=O) is common to both, but its position relative to other atoms dictates whether it is an aldehyde or a ketone, thereby classifying them as funktiolisomeerit.
