Fullformat

Full format, often referred to as full-frame, is a term used in digital photography to describe image sensors that approximate the size of traditional 135-format film. In practical terms, a full-format sensor measures about 36 by 24 millimeters, with a diagonal of roughly 43 millimeters. This size is the same as the frame of standard 35mm film, and the designation distinguishes these sensors from smaller formats such as APS-C and Four Thirds.

The term is commonly abbreviated as FF in product specifications. Full-frame sensors are used in both DSLR and mirrorless camera systems and are favored for their potential advantages: improved low-light performance and dynamic range, better color depth, and a shallower depth of field at equivalent angles of view and apertures. They also allow wider fields of view with the same lens focal length compared to smaller sensors.

Trade-offs of full-frame systems include higher cost, larger and heavier camera bodies and lenses, and sometimes larger files and higher power consumption. Because of the larger image circle required, lenses designed for full-frame cameras can be more expensive and physically larger than those for crop-sensor bodies.

Historically, full-frame digital cameras emerged as manufacturers sought to replicate the look and field of view of 35mm film, culminating in prominent models in the early 2000s and continuing through today’s professional and enthusiast mirrorless and DSLR lines. The term is often contrasted with crop formats like APS-C and Micro Four Thirds, which use smaller sensors and different image characteristics.
